School Visit and Site Clearance Morning

A busy week at the Quarry. Nunnery Wood High School visited the site on Wednesday, 260 students visited the site in 4 parties of 65. The trip was very successful, Janet took these pictures of the day:

The second picture shows that scrub was encroaching on the fossil hunting area. Today (Saturday 13th November) had already been arranged as a  Champion's scrub clearing day. The pictures below show the before and after views of the morning's work. This work will surely enhance the experience of visitors to the site including the fossil hunters visiting next Wednesday.

Project Launch Event Planning

Whitmans Hill Quarry Champions.... Planning Meeting – held on 26th November 2010.

On 26th November, a group of Champions and supporters met at The New Inn, Storridge, to collect initial thoughts about our mandate,- To Preserve and To Promote, and with this in mind, to contemplate a possible launch day for Champion activities at Whitmans.
After some discussion and pooling of thoughts, it was mooted that 29th January 2011 might be a good day for the launch, with a timespan of 1pm ---4pm.
The event could be based at Storridge Village Hall, and could involve displays depicting ;-   the commercial history of the quarry,  plants and wildlife now resident, the geology exposed, and fossil evidence of former life.   Some refreshments could be made available, and, weather permitting, a couple of on- foot sorties might be made up to the quarry, led by suitable guide personnel.
To publicise the event, an entry could be placed in the Newsletter, and Cradley School could be contacted. Local residents with personal knowledge of the working era of the quarry should be invited to attend or contribute memories.
The archives would be investigated to gain previously recorded information, and the Woolhope Society contacted for their stored details. Some previously produced leaflets would be re- sourced for re-production. A possible film loop or slide presentation might be incorporated.
The Champion professionals, - Eve Miles and Alex Bailey would be asked if any funding exists for payment of the hire of the hall and other expenses. We understand that insurance is already in place to cover such activities under E H T provision.
As part of the programme, a facility for participants to explore their own projects could be made available.
An Interim Meeting will be held at Storridge Village Hall on Friday 3rd December2010, at 7pm  to establish and review the progress of the initial preparations, and make further plans at that time.

In addition to these events, a work day was decided upon for quarry site maintenance and plant control, to be held on Saturday 13th November 10, meeting initially at Storridge Hall car park at 10am.
